In 2006, four of Vienna’s most prominent wine growers teamed up to form WienWein, and now the group has welcomed two new members.

The WienWein group has been the driving force behind the city’s resurgent wine scene from the word go. Four of the city’s leading and most dedicated growers – Rainer Christ, Michael Edlmoser, Fritz Wieninger and Richard Zahel – took the decision to pool their resources for the good of Viennese wine back in 2006. And now two more big names have joined them: Weingut Cobenzl (the City of Vienna’s wine estate) and traditional producer Mayer am Pfarrplatz. The old and new members are united by an uncompromising approach to quality, an unshakable belief in the potential of the capital’s premium growing sites and a firm conviction that the future of Viennese wine should be rooted firmly in a return to its traditional strengths.

The six members of WienWein represent the very best of the Viennese wine industry, and together they cultivate almost a third of the Austrian capital’s vineyards. In total there are some 700 hectares of vineyards within the city limits. They shape the cityscape, provide an environmental boon and are a much-loved local recreation area.
