The urban environment of the Chilean capital was totally transformed with the construction of the “Santiago Great Tower,” which since 2011 has become the tallest building in South America, measuring 300 meters in height, and surpassing the Central Park Twin Towers of Caracas (Venezuela).

To take advantage of this milestone for touristic purposes, the project managers plan to create a skydeck open to the public at the top, with a restaurant, museum, and small movie theater. Those who have already visited the construction site swear that the view of Santiago in unparalleled. When the sky is clear, you can see the ski slopes of El Colorado in the Andes Mountains on one side and planes landing at the international airport on the other.

The skydeck will take up the last two floors of the tower (floors 62 and 63) as well as an upper balcony. The rooftop has a surface of 1,800 square meters and will be protected by a transparent awning that will allow views of the city. On floor 62, there will be facilities in operation for those who want to buy souvenirs, a café and a small movie theater, which will feature a short movie explaining the history of the building’s construction. Its distribution will be similar to that of the second floor of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

The total cost of the Costanera Center project currently exceeds 1 billion US dollars, some 30% more than what was budgeted. It was designed by Alemparte, Barreda & Associates and Pelli Architects, the latter of which were the designers for the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), the world’s tallest structure until 2003. The 107,000 square meters of the tower will be for offices. The part of the building that connects with the local streets below will house shops, restaurants, and a five star hotel.
