The Lisboa Story Centre in Terreiro do Paço is the new centre of attraction in this monumental Lisboa square, which has now been revitalised.
The Lisboa Story Centre is an original project developed by the Associação Turismo de Lisboa and Câmara Municipal de Lisboa (Lisboa City Council). Positioned as a tourist attraction and a platform of knowledge and interactivity, it showcases the main facts and events that shaped the history of Lisboa from the foundation of the city to the present day.
This interpretation centre invites visitors to discover the city and its heritage in an entertaining and interactive way through an audio-guide system depicting accounts and scenes faithful to the period. It focuses especially on the events that occurred in the Pombaline Baixa (downtown) and Terreiro do Paço.
The route is organised around six focal points: Lisboa, Myths and Realities; Lisboa: Global City; 1st November 1755, All Saints’ Day; Pombal’s Vision; Terreiro do Paço; and, finally, Virtual Lisboa. The 1755 earthquake is presented in an immersion experience theatre.
The visit can be complemented by a climb to the first floor (Virtual Lisboa), where the public can interact with a technology that makes it possible to show important historical events in a scale model of the centre of Lisboa.
After this journey in time and space to Lisboa’s past, visitors are sure to have a different view of the dynamic, revitalised Terreiro do Paço. Besides the Lisboa Story Centre, the square also has outdoor terraces, restaurants, cafés and a discothèque, a food court, refreshment kiosks, a florist’s and a tourist office. These recreational and cultural facilities are making the square more and more popular as the favourite Lisboa meeting point.
