Following the past two successful editions of the Avantgarde Jazz Festival, Maistra will be providing their support for this years edition of the and highly acclaimed music festival. Rovinj will once again host some of the most important names of the world jazz scene

The inspiration to create the Avantgarde Jazz Festival was started with hopes of enriching the cultural experience of visiting tourists as well as providing the domestic and international audience the pleasure of listening to jazz music in the prestigious location of Rovinj. The festival has so far hosted some of the most renowned world jazz musicians including George Benson, the international musical group Playing for Change, and Return to Forever IV one of the preeminent jazz fusion movement groups of the 1970s led by Chick Corea.

This years festival will feature a star-studded program that will satisfy even the most demanding audience of jazz lovers, as well as casual fans of the genre. In May and July the festival will host jazz greats including: the singer Amira Medunjanin, nicknamed the Bosnian Billie Holiday; Rudresh Mahanthappa, recognized as one of the best alto saxophonists in the world; John Pizzarelli, a well-known performer of mainstream jazz; Otis Taylor, the American multi-instrumentalist considered one of todays most important blues musicians; Ramsey Lewis, a multiple Grammy Award winner; Dee Dee Bridgewater, regarded by many to be the successor of the famous Ella Fitzgerald; and the Jazz HRT Orchestra featuring Ricardo Luque and Simon Marlow.

The festival will open on Friday, May 3rd with Rudresh Mahanthappa''s Gamak Quartet at the Rovinj Multimedia Centre, while the concert of the excellent sevdalinka interpreter Amira Medunjanin will take place at the same location a day later on May 4th.

Each concert will start at 9 pm, followed by drinks and conversation with the musicians in a more intimate atmosphere at the wine cellar Kantinon located on the town quay. This Rovinj wine cellar has recently introduced a completely new concept of traditional Rovinj cuisine created by celebrated Hotel Monte Mulinis chef Tomislav Gretić and famous Croatian sommelier Emil Perdec. During the after party the wine cellars guests will have the opportunity to try various culinary specialties inspired by Rovinj fishing traditions and prepared exclusively with local, fresh ingredients. Guests will also be able to sample the best Istrian wines, brandies, grappa, and enjoy a special serving of beer in 1-liter mugs.

Tickets for the after party can be bought in Maistras hotels: Monte Mulini, Lone, Eden, Park and Adriatic, as well as in all ticket outlets of Eventim systems and online at www.eventim.hr. The HRK 150.00 ticket price includes entry to the concert as well as appetizers and a drink in the Kantinon wine cellar.

About the performers:

Rudresh Mahanthappa was declared the best alto saxophonist in the world in 2012, according to critics from the reputable music magazine DownBeat, the second consecutive year that he has received the honor. Enjoying a prestigious reputation in his adopted home of New York City, but originally coming from Trieste, Italy, he has also been voted the best alto saxophonist by the international Jazz Journalists Association for the last four years running.

Few musicians have Mahanthappas ability to unite the vast possibilities of music and culture. His new album Gamak – the Indian term for a melodic ornamentation - was released in late January, which gives the audience of the 3. Avantgarde Jazz Festival the privilege of being amongst the first to enjoy the new music material. It was made in cooperation with David Fiuczynski (guitar), Francois Moutin (bass) and Dan Weiss (drums). The music presented by Mahanthappa unites Western forms of jazz, progressive rock, heavy metal, American folk country music, go-go and ambient music while still weaving in the rich, traditional sounds of Indian, Chinese, African, and Indonesian music. The final result is a music that cannot be categorized, creating a style that perfectly matches the time we live in.

Amira Medunjanin is known as one of the most famous interpreters of sevdah and sevdalinka in the world today. The kind of vocalist and personality she is can perhaps best be summarized by her reputation as the Bosnian Billie Holiday. Her performances are meditative, sincere, and profound, and yet there is a great simplicity found in her music. With her fascinating voice and deep expression of emotion Amira has won over both fans and critics during recent performances at the Zagreb Vip Club.

The fact that she has recorded several albums -- including her latest release Amulette which will be presented in Rovinj -- for the famous record label Harmonia Mundi, is proof of her popularity. In addition to sevdalinka Medunjanin also performs and records songs from other countries of the former Yugoslavian (or Balkan) region, particularly Macedonian and Serbian music. These are traditional songs that, regardless of their place of origin, share the same sensibility and strength of emotion that is felt by the listener as well as in the performer. Each song carries its story interwoven by metaphors and transfers a message of the most important values in life in a very subtle way.

Amira was introduced to sevdalinka by her mother, and her fascination with the oral culture and tradition of Bosnia and Herzegovina was so strong that she gave up her translator job in the European Commission office in Sarajevo to commit to the study of sevdah and to find the best way to present it to the world.
