Vienna’s markets continue to go from strength to strength, fueling a burgeoning restaurant trade along the way.

The restaurants and bars on Vienna’s markets are booming. The popular Naschmarkt has just welcomed an offshoot of one of the greats on the Vienna gastro scene. Star chef Sohyi Kim, the proprietor of the two-toque Kim Kocht restaurant near the Volksoper opera house in the ninth district, will be selling her delicious chutneys, sauces and spice blends at one of the Naschmarkt stalls. Kim kocht. Shop und Studio is a deli-cum-studio which lifts the lid on the art of cooking. It also doubles up as a social project as Kim sets aside a share of the new shop’s turnover for projects aimed at children and teenagers from immigrant families.

The Karmelitermarkt in the second district has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years. Foodies from Slow Food Wien occupy a special corner of the market every Saturday, and the other bars and restaurants are thriving too. Established favorites include “Markachterl”, which recently commissioned the services of Josef Hohensinn (who worked alongside legendary Korso chef Reinhard Gehrer), and Georgian eatery Madiani. New arrivals include Tewa, which is branching out from the Naschmarkt to open a modern new restaurant at the Karmelitermarkt. A short time ago Kaas am Markt moved in next door. Half-deli and half-restaurant, Kaas offers organic and slow food products, as well as delicious snacks.
