Deemed to be a Festival of International Tourist Interest, the Palm Sunday Procession gets Easter Week celebrations underway in Elche on 17th April.
This event is particularly eye-catching and interesting due to its prominence and the number of white palm leaves carried by the devoted.
This religious manifestation has become one of the most characteristic and popular events held in the town, drawing large crowds every year. At 10.45 a.m., the Palm leaves will be blessed in the boulevard known as Paseo de la Estación. From there, participants in the procession that makes its way to Diagonal del Palau, will cross Altamira Bridge and proceed down the Avenida del País Valencià avenue until they reach their destination, the Santa María Basilica.
Palm Sunday Procession in Elche
The palm competition organised by the Council of Holy Week Guilds and Brotherhoods is one of the highlights, featuring true works of art made by hand with representations of complex figures related with these celebrations, or depicting Elche's monuments and traditions.
On 15th and 16th April, the Mercado de la Palma Blanca (White Palm Market) will be set up in the town, a perfect opportunity to buy an artistic marvel made out of white palm. On Sunday, there will also be an exhibition of palm leaves in the Palma Blanca Competition. From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Town Hall's Lonja Medieval exhibition hall, you can admire the palms displayed in the categories of artisan, plaited, miniatures and special Municipal White Palm School.
