Catalonia already has a total of 476 rural tourism establishments categorized by Wheat Ears. This system rates tourism establishments in accordance with the quality, level and standards of their accommodation, environment and services.
This classification has 5 categories, identified by the graphical representation of the wheat ear; brown for agrotourism establishments and green for other rural lodgings. The categories are: Basic (1 wheat ear), Comfort (2 wheat ears), Great Comfort (3 wheat ears), Superior (4 wheat ears) and Premium Superior (5 wheat ears).
The classification of rural establishments with wheat ears, created by the Catalan government, is a pioneer model in Europe. The parameters that define each of the five categories of this system include the following features: house and building’s surroundings, interior rooms and exterior areas, furniture and facilities of the house, marketing conditions, services provided for guests (restaurant, hospitality, health ...); and cultural, active, family or agrotourism activities provided.
Membership of rural establishments in this classification is voluntary. Catalonia has currently classified a quarter of all eligible establishments registered in the Catalonia Tourism Registry.
