Forty-nine current dramatic works will explore the festival topic “Everything different?” from mid-May. The musical program is dominated by Alban Berg.
The Musikverein is the venue for the festival concerts.
During the Vienna Festival, the elite of opera and theater directors, conductors and orchestras will set international standards with their modern stagings and new works . The brilliant open-air opening with the final of the "Eurovision Young Musicians 2010" on May 14 is followed by another free concert at City Hall with no fewer than eleven bands.
The program of plays performed on various Viennese stages runs from May 14 to June 20. A long day at the theater is filled by Peter Stein's twelve-hour performance in Italian of Dostoyevsky's novel " Demons " . The theater epic " Lipsynch " by Robert Lepage and Frank Castorf's " To Moscow, to Moscow " are amongst the truly great dramatic productions . Director Luc Bondy contributes the premieres of " Sweet Nothings " (based on Arthur Schnitzler's "Liebelei") and " Helena " (a new translation of Euripides by Peter Handke) to the 196 performances.
At the centre of the musical program is Alban Berg, the great innovator, whose 125th birthday is celebrated this year, as is the 75th anniversary of his death. Highlights are his operas "Wozzeck" and "Lulu" at Theater an der Wien.
The sixty or so festival concerts run parallel to the Vienna Festival, this year from May 9 at the Musikverein . Amongst the classical stars performing are: Simon Keenlyside, Hélène Grimaud, Genia Kühmeier, Radu Lupu, Maurizio Pollini, Patricia Petibon, Michael Schade ...
