At its April 2011 meeting the VisitEngland Board decided that VisitEngland will withdraw its financial and operational support for the EnglandNet platform by 30th September 2011.
The decision that the cost of operating the EnglandNet platform can no longer be met by VisitEngland was taken against the background of the 34% cut in the organisation’s budget and the specific objectives which the organisation has been given, following the coalition Government’s recent public spending review. This makes it more essential than ever for VisitEngland to ensure that it deploys its financial and human resources in support of activities which contribute directly to the achievement of those objectives.
The design of the national product database and the software programs which allow data to be input to the database are to be released as an Open Source toolset, together with all the supporting documentation. This toolset will be available to third parties to utilise the technology of the national product database to build new systems and products, to capture data and to let existing systems interoperate, all to a recognised national standard.
The elements of the EnglandNet platform which allow users to search for tourism product and to book accommodation through commercial operators are based on proprietary products which are owned by VisitEngland’s technical partner, Eviivo Limited. Eviivo will retain these elements and has indicated its intention to continue to operate them and to interoperate with other technical suppliers and their systems.
