For two years, airberlin has been the only airline to fly without a stopover from Germany to the Caribbean island of Curaçao.
airberlin started the connection from Dusseldorf in November 2011 and since then has been taking travellers once a week every Tuesday on an Airbus A330-200 to the island off the coast of Venezuela. Curaçao is particularly popular with travellers to the Caribbean, owing to its long sandy beaches and unspoilt dive sites.
"The long-haul connection from our hub in Dusseldorf to Curaçao is very well linked to airberlin's European route network. We offer our flight guests feeder flights from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark and Italy. The connection is particularly popular with guests from the Netherlands thanks to Dusseldorf airport's great links and proximity to the border," stated Detlef Altmann, Senior Vice President Sales Touristic Services at airberlin.
Since the connection to Curaçao started, Curacao's Tourist Board has been seeing increasing numbers of visitors from Germany. Edward Suares, Marketing Director Europe Curaçao Tourist Board, states: "For over ten years, Curaçao has been actively engaging with the German market and the numbers of visitors have continued to grow ever since. Before we had the direct connection from Dusseldorf, around 8,000 German-speaking visitors came each year. airberlin's non-stop flight has ensured an explosive growth in the German market. This year we are expecting to exceed 20,000 guests from Germany".
airberlin offers connecting flights from Berlin, Dresden, Hamburg, Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart. Copenhagen, Milan, Vienna and Zurich airports are also ideally connected to the non-stop flight to Curaçao via Dusseldorf.
