Barcelona Mobile World Capital from 2012 to 2018
Barcelona has been designated by GSMA -the association representing mobile operators worldwide- as the Mobile World Capital from 2012 to 2018. This means that during this period Barcelona not only will host the celebration of the Mobile World Congress, but it will also become a hub of global mobile communications.

The designation of Barcelona beats other major European capitals such as Paris, Munich and Milan, in the evaluation process called by the GSMA to host the Mobile World Capital. It can be considered a recognition of the Catalan city, which has already hosted the Mobile World Congress since 2006 with great success.

As Mobile World Capital, Barcelona will create a permanent operations centre, called the Mobile World Centre, which will host technological exhibitions, a shopping area and it will have room for a museum. It will also develop industrial, recreational and cultural initiatives.

Therefore, Barcelona will become a technological and cultural hub aimed at promoting industrial activity, creating new business opportunities and boosting mobile communication.

Barcelona will also continue to host the Mobile World Congress, which will take place from 27th February to 1st March 2012.

Tarragona host of the Mediterranean Games 2017
The Catalan city of Tarragona (Costa Daurada) will host the 18th Mediterranean Games, to be held in 2017. The International Committee of the games designated Tarragona as the headquarters of these games, during the General Assembly held on the 15th October in Turkey.

Tarragona OlimpicaThe Mediterranean Games 2017 will be held in Tarragona from the 30th June to the 9th July. The candidature of Tarragona offers the broadest sports program of these games' history, with a total of 30 disciplines. Note that there will be two disciplines, athletics and swimming, for athletes with disabilities. Of the other 28 sports, only three of them are not Olympic: water skiing, karate and pétanque.
One of the main attractions offered by the candidature of Tarragona is that the Games will extend to other nearby cities. Tarragona will host the competitions of athletics, basketball, football, gymnastics, golf, swimming, water polo, tennis, shooting, volleyball, water skiing and taekwondo. 12 sub sites will also host other disciplines: Barcelona (equestrian), Calafell (fencing, football and table tennis), Cambrils (judo, karate and archery), Castelldefels (canoeing and rowing), Constantí (weightlifting), El Vendrell (boxing), La Selva del Camp (handball) Reus (handball and football), Salou (triathlon, sailing and beach volleyball), Torredembarra (badminton and volleyball), Valls (basketball and football) and Vila-seca (cycling, wrestling and pétanque).

New star rating for Catalan hotels
Catalan hotels presented a new star rating this summer that includes two new categories: 4-star superior and GL. Hotels have also included a new type of room, the family room (for four people), that is added to the traditional singles and doubles.

In addition to the basic criteria for defining the rating of an establishment, such as the size of the rooms, the new rating gives priority to the offered services and establishes certain minimum requirements for each category. Categories are no longer exclusively based on size criteria but also on issues related to equipment, facilities, services and costumer benefits.

This summer Catalan rural establishments also launched their first thorns, now used to categorize them. The graphic representation of the thorn (brown for agro tourism and green for other rural lodgings) is used to identify the 5 categories: Basic (1 thorn), Comfort (2 thorns), Great Comfort (3 thorns), Superior (4 thorns) and Premium Superior (5 thorns).

Finally, we remind you that the categories for Catalan campsites are still Luxury, 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Looking for a snow destination in Catalunya?
Catalonia concentrates the widest choice of snow facilities in Spain, with 16 ski resorts located in the Pyrenees. They offer a skiable area of 625 kilometres, more than 400 of which are downhill runs, while the rest are trails for cross-country skiing and other winter sport activities.

The Catalan Pyrenees are home to ten Alpine Ski resorts: Baqueria-Beret, Vallter 2000, Boi-Taull, La Molina, Tavascan, Port-Aine, Espot Esqui, Masella, Vall de Nuria, and Port del Comte. (la paraula radiant existeix, però no l'he trobat en combinació amb "sun").

The Catalan ski resorts have the capacity to transport more than 163.000 skiers per hour, and have more than 2.300 cannons to produce artificial snow, thanks to which the season can start in December and be extended until the end of April.

On top of that, most resorts also offer additional activities such as dog sledding trips, night-time snowboarding descents, horseback riding in the snow, snowshoeing, snow cycling lessons, heliskiing, igloo building or orienteering exercises. A wide choice of accomodation including spas and thermal baths, traditional gastronomy and exceptional cultural heritage -with the stunning Vall de Boí, declared World Heritage site by the UNESCO- counts also among the assets of the Catalan Pyrennes as a winter sports destination.
