Last year, more than 6,000 people came to the Czech Republic for cosmetic surgery. This means that 20 per cent of all plastic surgeries in the country were performed on foreigners. Not surprisingly, most patients come from the nearby countries such as Germany, Austria or Slovakia and from the UK. The most common treatments are liposuction, breast augmentation and rhinoplasty. Except for cosmetic improvements, the medical tourist travel mostly for dental, orthopaedic or infertility treatments.

Women use the services of the cosmetic surgery far more often than man – 87 per cent of the foreign patients are female. This fact also influences the most popular operations chart – breast augmentation and liposuction are on the top. On the other hand, also men are discovering the advantages of artificial body improvements, they prefer liposuction and rhinoplasty.

An average client from abroad spends 3 to 10 days in the Czech Republic, much longer than an average sightseeing tourist. Unfortunately, it is still not common for the visitors to combine their medical stay with e.g. sightseeing or post-op spa treatment.

“There is a gap on the market that offers new business possibilities for travel agents as well as spa centres,” says Tomio Okamura from the Association of Czech Travel Agents and Tour Operators. “Especially the clients from distant countries consider the attractiveness of the destination, i.e. the ‘added value’ as one of the important factors when deciding where to go for their cosmetic surgery treatment. In this particular point, the prestigious Czech destinations like for example Prague have a bit of an advantage over their rivals, yet the well-known Czech spa cities might also use their ‘brand’ to attract more foreign cosmetic surgery clients.”

Medical tourism is currently enjoying its biggest boom in the United States, Europe keeps on growing too, though. For example many Germans travel for their medical treatments to Eastern Europe, because their insurance covers their treatment costs in any country of the European Union.

This year, the overall number of medical travellers reached the amount of 32,000,000 and estimations predict that there will be 40,000,000 of them in 2010. As for the plastic and cosmetic surgery, the most popular destination worldwide is Thailand, where 1,400,000 tourists headed last year to have their imperfect bodies brought back into shape. The fastest developing destination is India, in which the number of medical tourists keeps on growing 30 per year a year, especially due to the fact that fluent English is spoken by an absolute majority of the population and the communication with your doctor is thus easy and stress-free.
