Boris Johnson, who has been in Zurich as part of the official delegation and who chairs London United, the group responsible for coordinating the capital’s host city bid, said:...

“This is a tremendously disappointing result. We put together a cracking bid, our technical specification was top notch and our stadiums would have been packed to the rafters. Londoners love football. This is a blow but we have achieved a great deal with this bid and we have much to look ahead to.”

The Mayor has been a vociferous campaigner for England 2018 and joined football legend Ian Wright to hand over the capital’s final bid book in May this year.  He added:
“We remain 100 per cent focused on developing London as the most exciting sporting destination in the world, and we have a lot to offer other countries from putting together our bid and from planning the Olympic and Paralympic Games. We will carry on providing a strong voice in football and world sport.”
Congratulating the winners, Russia, the Mayor told Londoners to be proud of England’s bid and to look ahead.  He said:
“The international exposure we’ve had through the bid process is incredible and we have shown that England’s wonderfully diverse and open cities are ripe for hosting the very best sporting events from all corners of the world. This has been a bid to be proud of and, whilst of course we congratulate Russia, we can look ahead to hosting the UEFA Champions League Final next year and the Olympics in 2012, the first time since 1948.”
1000 revellers assembled in the Scoop, the outdoor amphitheatre next to City Hall, and watched the result live on big screens and enjoyed free entertainment and music in the build up to the result.
For London the bid process has been more than just about the elite game of football. London United and the bid team have developed legacy and community proposals to run alongside the main tournament leading to a greater understanding of the amazing work already being done in this regard.
We have 15 professional clubs running large, diverse and advanced community programmes, covering all London’s 33 boroughs. This gives us a huge potential asset for delivering community legacy programmes. The bidding process has allowed us to raise the profile of these programmes; explain their potential to a wider audience and begin the process of bringing them together as a means of creating and delivering community development policy.

Internationally, many of our clubs are using the expertise developed in this country to provide community development through football in other countries. By building partnerships with clubs and organisations overseas and sharing their knowledge and experience, London’s clubs are helping to improve the lives of young people around the world, and all this good work will continue.
The bid also brought the Olympic Stadium and Park into the spotlight again and helped to showcase the outstanding potential this area offers for London’s future.

In addition, our bid has highlighted the huge investment already underway in London’s transport including Crossrail. The greatest and best-connected world city has the guarantee of better public transport and a vital boost to the economy that will keep its growing population on the move.
