From fashion to film, form to function, the 2011 Design Indaba promises cutting-edge design born out of the best of South Africa’s unique cultural elements.

Design Indaba was founded on the belief that a better world can be reached through creativity – that design can “fuel an economic revolution in South Africa” – and, since its inception in 1995, has established itself as the premier platform for local designers to showcase their talents globally, while attracting international names to Cape Town. Top speakers at this year's event include Alberto Alessi, head of design for his family’s iconic brand, and Charlie Todd, who has caused many a surprised smile following the founding of his organisation Improv Everywhere.

Cape Town Tourism will be there, with an interactive stand encouraging expo visitors to literally make their mark in support of Cape Town’s bid to be World Design Capital in 2014.

The Design Indaba Conference is from February 23 to 25, and the expo follows thereafter, from February 25 to 27, all at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

The Fringe
Cape Town's mushrooming design and informatics district in the east of the city now has a name – The Fringe – which perfectly describes the young, technology-driven energy which coalesces there.

The Fringe is based on an urban “science park” model, along the lines of 22@Barcelona, the Toronto Fashion Incubator and Design London.

The district already houses the Cape Craft & Design Institute and the Cape Town Fashion Council, which have banded together to form the Creative Enterprise Training Unit. Open Innovation Studios, a social entrepreneurship environment, as well as a range of small- and medium-sized design and ICT firms are thriving, and at the heart of it all is the Cape Peninsula University of Technology’s Faculty of Informatics and Design.

Infecting the City
Infecting the City
, Spier’s public arts festival, will hit the streets of Cape Town from February 21 to 26, transforming the centre of town into a real-time creative melting pot, drawing on the region’s rich heritage and traditions from all over the world.

Thought-provoking art will be found in little nooks and crannies throughout the city. From the traditional riel dancing of Khoisan farm workers to sacred chanting by Senegalese Sufis, the event programme showcases a myriad of Cape – and cosmopolitan – culture.

Events are all free of charge except the “Talking Heads” event at the Iziko South African National Gallery on February 23, which is R100 and features speakers on a variety of relevant topics.

The Swartland and West Coast region, which starts some 50km north of Cape Town, offers cultural and culinary opportunities outside of the high energy of the city centre.

A must on any West Coast itinerary is a visit to Evita se Perron, a theatre restaurant at the old railway station in Darling run by satirist, comedian and playwright Pieter-Dirk Uys. Darling is a quintessential Western Cape village and quite the creative hub.

While there, visitors can partake in an outdoor seafood feast of bokkoms (dried fish), crayfish and snoek, or enjoy a glass of local wine from one of the friendly cellars along the Darling Wine and Arts Experience or the Cape West Coast wine route
