The next few weeks promise a sensory celebration: Feed your soul at Cape Town International Jazz Festival on March 25 and 26 and your stomach at the Pick n Pay Taste of Cape Town festival from April 7 to 10.

The Cape Town International Jazz Festival features equal parts local talent and global appeal. This year’s line-up includes saxophonist Wayne Shorter, 1970s band Earth, Wind & Fire, Senegalese sensation Youssou N’Dour and Afro-soul queen Simphiwe Dana, not to mention 2011 Grammy Award-winning bassist, singer and composer Esperanza Spalding.

While you’re at it, why not venture further afield on a jazz safari through the city’s diverse suburbs?

Then, when you’re full of philharmonics, join the foodies and the fundis, the gourmands and the gluttons at Taste of Cape Town in early April.

True to its name, this event showcases the top culinary talents of the Cape. And this year’s feast mixes it up too: Dishes will be “complemented by offerings from some of the finest wine, beer, whisky and coffee makers” around, so says festival director Justine Drake, not to mention the city’s “local food heroes” at the Small Producers’ Market, where you can pick up handmade cheeses, homemade jams and a whole lot else to inspire the domestic goddess or Godiva (can anyone say “naked chef”?) in you.

The jazz fest is at Cape Town International Convention Centre while Taste of Cape Town is walking distance away at Green Point Cricket Club. Slow travel – by foot or bicycle – is one of the best ways to see the city, so why not take two weeks out to savour the many flavours of the Cape!
