Julian Lage has achieved a reputation as a versatile musician who combines elements of jazz, blues, folk, Indian and classical music. His talent is confirmed by numerous reviews from prominent music magazines like Down Beat, Planet Jazz, Just Jazz Guitar Player, San Francisco Chronicle, National Geographics and the Los Angeles Times.
Julian Lage was a prodigy who began performing on stage at the age of six and two years later he played with the legendary Carlos Santana. Marc Becker made an Academy Award-nominated documentary about him called âJules at Eightâ. When he turned thirteen in 2000 he performed at the Grammy Awards. Though by then he had already earned the epithet âvirtuosoâ, he wanted formal jazz and classical education and studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Sonoma State University, Ali Akbar College of Music and the famous Berklee College of Music.
As a seven-year-old boy Lage played with the famous vibraphonist, composer and teacher Gary Burton and in 2004 Burton released an album called âGenerationsâ, followed by âNext Generationsâ in 2005. In 2009 Lage, whose recordings are featured on many compilations, finally released his debut album called âSounding Pointâ and got excellent reviews and a nomination for the 2010 Grammy in the Best Contemporary Jazz Album category.
In the famous DownBeatâs âBlindfold Testâ Jim Hall listened to records trying to guess who the performers are and when he heard the recording of Lageâs âLi''l Darlin''â from that album, the legendary guitarist said: âThatâs Julian Lage. I am familiar with his work from when he was eleven years old. I admire him â he is different. He offers a completely unique approach to the well-known Count Basie standard âLi''l Darlin''â. In the meantime Julian Lage recorded his second solo album âGladwellâ released this year.
He has performed with famous artists such as Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Charles Lloyd, Billy Higgins, Bobby Hutcherson, Toots Thielemanson, Kenny Werner, Nnenna Freelon, Christian McBride, Martin Taylor and Eric Harland.
