A short detour from Mariahilfer Strasse onto Zollergasse is always worthwhile – this quiet side road adjoining Vienna’s biggest shopping street is lined with stores that are tailor made for individualists.
Zollergasse in Vienna's 7th district has made a name for itself as a magnet for creatives thanks to the wide array of original boutiques, bars and restaurants there. Alongside Neubaugasse, Lindengasse and Kirchengasse, Zollergasse should be a fixed entry on the itinerary of all shoppers looking to get off the beaten track.
Advanced Minority is the perfect place for anyone looking for original printed tees featuring excellent designs. There is a huge range of reasonably priced t-shirts in stock. The fashion label produces strictly limited print runs, and regularly teams up with a collective of international artists.
"You create fashion" is the highly unusual concept behind useabrand. Users can visit the fashion label's website (www.useabrand.com) and upload their very own designs for a range of different fashion items. The submissions are peer-rated each month to decide which design will be produced and go on sale at the shop.
A short walk leads to designer Mandarina Brausewetter's boutique, The Hot Dogs. This corner store stocks her street graffiti inspired t-shirts and blazers finished in sweatshirt material, as well as a range of young individual fashion labels. Diagonally opposite, Wood Wood presents rectilinear fashion from Denmark. The hip pieces are a mix of high fashion and streetwear.
On the corner of Lindengasse, Kingpin sells fashion for adherents of the hot Burlesque trend. The business is dedicated entirely to petticoats, pin-up chic, rockabilly and rock'n'roll style. There's no sign of fashion at all at Milk & Honey. All sorts of shrill items from ashtrays to lamps, from bags to umbrellas, are concealed behind the colorful shopfront.
Zollergasse also has a lot to offer when it comes to food and drink. Every day there are freshly made salads, sandwiches, baguettes and yoghurts to be had from Lena & Laurenz. The midday menu features soup and rice dishes, and the focus is always on organic produce. Naturkost St. Josef, a founding father of the city's organic scene, carries a wide selection of organic produce and hearty vegetarian dishes. In the evening things hot up at old favorite Europa, where the hip crowd can enjoy find food and drinks late into the night.
